Hi Heather! How's it going? Shreveport sucks and you should be in New Orleans. I miss you, and I'll see you Thursday.

8:30 pm - School
|
On Thursday morning, I went to school and took a psychology test. I went home and then me and my mom drove to Memphis. After passing the GNO bridge toll booth, the first song to come on the radio was that Memphis, Tennessee song by Johnny River.
On Friday I went to interview at the Southern College of Optometry. You can ask Heather, I was nervous about this. They put the actual interview in about the middle of a five hour process. I felt pretty good about the way it went. The style of the interview was very conversational and not combative at all. They told me that if I got in right away, I would be phoned on Monday or Tuesday.
I had work on Saturday for 4 PM, so we had to leave early that morning. But an ice storm had kicked in over Friday night and the roads had a lot of frozen rain on them. My car windows were iced over and I couldn't open my doors. I had to pour water down the creases of my car door, and I needed to borrow an ice scraper from a hotel worker. I drove slowly out of the city. On the interstate I was going something like 45 mph for a while. It was sleeting for about 100 miles south of Memphis. But generally, the drive down wasn't bad. I did get to work over an hour late though even though we left the Memphis at 9 AM.
Today, while I was at work, an SCO representative left a message on my phone. I called back when I got a lunch break, but the office was closed for the day.

9:20 pm - It was arrested development
|
Tonight Fox aired the final four episodes of Arrested Development - all together in one lump sum so as to quickly get rid of its obligation to the show's fans. Never mind that they decided to air it against the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. I missed the first two episodes because I got off work over an hour late and sat in line at the Burger King drive-thru for twenty five minutes. The last two episodes were great though. It was a fitting ending to one of my all-time favorite shows. Maybe it'll get picked up by Showtime or maybe they'll make a movie about it like they hinted in the finale. But I doubt it. I still got three amazing (albeit truncated) seasons out of the show.

11:32 am - Back to School
|
I'm taking one class at Tulane this semester. Today is the first day back and it's raining. There's construction going on and dirt all over the place. Rain plus dirt equal mud.
I don't have a parking pass; so I have to find a parking place on one of the side streets. That turned out to be a lot easier than I expected. There was a lot more traffic on Gen. DeGaulle than I anticipated this morning, though; so I was a little late for my class.
My hours are bad as usual. I've been staying up until 4 or 5 and sleeping until 2 PM. My class is at 9:30 AM on Tues and Thurs. Plus I start work again on Friday. I slept last night from 6 AM to 8 AM. Some people do fine on little sleep. I don't. I'll need to work on this.

I went to Loren and Tim's wedding the other night. It was nice. I had a good time at the reception too. Heather thought I didn't dance enough. I thought I danced a fair amount, but maybe what I was doing on the floor isn't considered dancing.
Heather goes back to Shreveport later today. It might be a few months 'til I see her again. I miss her already.

2:54 pm - Saints
|
Merry Holidays to everyone.
I had more fun watching yesterday's Saints game than I have most of the season. It looked like the Saints were going to blow it by taking the lead with 2 minutes left in the game. But the Lions got a few big plays, including a ridiculous 40 yard pass on 4th and 17, and won the game. Lots of fun. And Go Texans for next week.

9:43 pm - It's about time for my arrival. What?
|
I'm back honkies. Back in New Orleans. Working on optometry school applications. On a brand new high speed internet connection.
I'm going to enjoy the holidays and then I'll start thinking about where I should work.
Speaking of Sarah Silverman, Jesus is Magic isn't playing in any theatre in the state of Louisiana. What's that about?

2:33 am - The Return
|
I drove down to Algiers today. The house is in pretty good condition. And I got to see my mom today for the first time in a month, which is nice. She's been here since Monday.
Downstairs smells from the fridge. We're going to chuck it. Part of the fence in the back is uprooted and off-kilter. We have some trees that went down, but the man who cuts the lawn already cut them up and moved them before I got here. There's not much work for me to do. I think I'll just drive around a bit tomorrow.

10:17 pm - Iguana update
|
Iggy Stardust went away yesterday. He was there when I left for work in the morning, but when I got back, he was gone. I checked again before I left for work today, but he wasn't there.
My mom called me at work around 5, though, and said he was back, in his same spot, except turned around. And that's where he is now.
We may have to do something about him.

12:22 am - I hate these things more than anything else . . . .
|
|
Last night I had an epic battle with a cockroach. I walked into the bathroom and one was on my sink counter lying on its back and kicking like a rotten child. All of my battles with roaches are epic, except when they're not, which is when I lose. And if they aren't epic wins or embarrasing defeats, they're pyrrhic victories. In the case of last night, it was really more of a pyrrhic victory - in the sense that it lead to an epic battle with a toilet and trying to get said cockroach and accompanying paper towels to not block the pipes of aforementioned toilet. In that regards, I ended the night in defeat. The toilet won the battle (I was not able to use it for the rest of the night), but I won the war (come morning time, I once again was able to assert dominance).

9:29 am - Graduate school issues
|
When I started grad school at UCSD, there were 16 of us in the new Anthropology class. Most of them were social/cultural or psychological anthropologists. 3 of us were archaeologists, a relatively newly added subdiscipline to UCSD's program. And then I dropped out after about 10 weeks.
Well UCSD is billing me for roughly 7.5 grand for the Winter quarter, which I happened to not attend. I've tried to get the matter resolved, but it hasn't been yet. And now they've threatened to turn the matter over to a collection agency in two weeks and all that that entails.
So, yesterday I called my old graduate advisor in the anth. department, J.C. She said I shouldn't worry and that she will take care of everything. Although, I've heard that before.
She asked what I've been up to. I informed her. I asked her how things were going there. She said they've been busy. During the break after Fall quarter, an e-mail was circulated to anth. grad students saying that 2 offices were open because two students had left the department. I knew that I was one of them, but had been wondering who the other was. J.C. told me it was Justin, one of the other archaeologists from my cohort. Well, it turns out that now the other archaeologist from my class will be dropping out this quarter, which really makes a wash of this last year for their archaeology program.
I had never had an field experience when I was accepted to grad school. And I felt bad when I left because I thought it would deter the school from accepting students in the future who hadn't done any field work. But these other two archaeology drop outs both had quite a bit of field experience. So, I don't feel as bad anymore.

I was working the closing shift today where the last hour is typically slow. And I saw this guy walk in the store entrance heading for my desk. Then I noticed there was this smaller guy walking by him who happened to be Frank. Reactions can be priceless. And I truly wish there had been a camera or something on me so I could see what my face looked like. I think my first reaction was to just look at him expressionless as he would walk by, like I'd always planned. But the best laid schemes of mice and men often go to shit. He wasn't going to walk by me; he was headed right for me. I was pretty civil throughout. He introduced me to his . . . uh . . . friend, who was there to order contacts. Sounds like he's doing alright. He spent some time teaching English in Hungary or somewhere. But now he's back home living with his parents while he tries to find a job where an English BA is an asset. I had some misgivings about it, but I made him write down his phone number. We'll see if I do anything with it.

Is Weezer supposed to have a new album out or something? I saw a video for a new song like three weeks ago on MTV or VH1, but heard nothing about it since then.
Also that song they play on that Ipod commercial, I finally heard on the radio. So, now I know enough about it to download it.
